At MARIO, we don’t just say all students have potential, we know they do. Research continues to tell us that when educators infuse the belief that all learners are capable into their practice, students prove them right. They achieve.
Commit to building ambitious learning programs with your students, for your students, and because of your students. Their passions and areas for growth will drive every choice you make, and you aim high. While you are asking your students to stretch, you will build scaffolding around them to keep them safe and supported as they reach for their personal best.

We leverage high expectations effectively because we enclose our high expectations with high-quality, evidence-based instructional strategies. We are strategic and measured in the way we prepare our students for their targets, and we consistently support them through their successes as well as their stumbles.

Being ambitious means more than just having high expectations for our students. MARIO Educators are ambitious in our program development, our advocacy, our collegial partnerships, and our own practice. Ambition is an act of intentional self-improvement, which means we are committed to the understanding that the MARIO Framework will never be a “finished product.” We can always be better.

Universal Design for Learning strategically aligns with the MARIO Framework’s goal of ultimately creating successful self-directed, expert learners by communicating, through actions and words, the belief that they are capable of achieving high expectations.

All students can reach high expectations when practitioners critically examine “one-size-fits-all” approaches to teaching and learning and provide flexible pathways for students to reach goals. Additionally, UDL practitioners help to build student motivation and reach those goals through meaningful relationships, scaffolds, supports, and flexible design. There is no “I” in team, but we believe there should be. The MARIO Framework creates a collaborative team where the learner is at the center. The student-teacher dyad is purposeful in its commitment to empower the individual. We then go further by engaging family members to be a part of this process in a meaningful and ongoing way. Differentiation isn’t enough. MARIO helps deliver a truly personalized learning experience for every student so that they learn to value their own strengths and see their areas for growth as unmet goals. We give power to students and families and provide the scaffolds they need to realize the future they want.

Connections to Universal Design Learning

Ambitious Universal Design for Learning strategically aligns with the MARIO Framework’s goal of creating successful self-directed, expert learners. Together, UDL and the MARIO Framework provide special education students with practices and scaffolds to build independence and agency, fostering meta-comprehension and meta-cognitive reflection. In both frameworks, the inherent belief that the student is capable of accomplishing amazing things redefines the traditional “medical model” where special educators address deficits. Together, MARIO and UDL are ambitious in their refusal to see the student as a passive participant in their own education.
